Mette-Marit was diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018. Prince Haakon says in his new book that although the disease cannot be cured with modern drugs, its progression can be slowed down.

– He won’t get better, but his condition won’t deteriorate in the near future either. That’s what doctors aim for.

Haakon describes that Mette-Marit is short of breath, although the illness is otherwise not visible from the outside. The illness is unpredictable and Mette-Marit can quickly become unwell. Because of this, he may have to cancel his duties even with short notice.

– He has a lot of good days. But uncertainty is always present. Do we have to cancel? We do not know. It is a part of life, illness and dealing with difficult issues together, Haakon states in his book.
