Parasites come in countless types. Most of them can be found in tropical areas where the diversity is much greater than here. The chance that you will contract a serious illness from a parasite in Belgium or the Netherlands is therefore quite small, but not non-existent. But what kind of parasites can infect us here? How do they do this? And which complaints should you be alert to? Parasitologist Jaap van Hellemond (Erasmus MC) explains. “There are very nasty parasites that appear to be resistant to medicines.”
