Joni Mäki’s action at the finish line of the Canmore free sprint was special.
Joni Mäki seemed to be heading into the semifinals of the Canmore World Cup free sprint with 50 meters to go until something amazing happened.
– What the hell happened! Yes, you should have the finish line in mind, and not look to the side. He doesn’t even try, said Viaplay’s expert Sami Jauhojärvi.
Mäki, who skied 3/5 in the semifinals, switched twenty meters before the finish from the wassberg technique to the mogren technique. Wassberg is a faster way to progress. With this, the Finn took third from the top, after Sweden Johan Häggström and Norway Erik Valnes swept past. Mäki remained 13 hundredths for the Swede and eight for the Norwegian.
It was left open whether Mäelle was confronted by a wall or whether she did not realize that someone might come from behind.

The man from Pyhäjärvi’s Pohti Ski Team has been on the rise in recent weeks. In Goms’ free mc sprint two weeks ago, the man was eighth, and last weekend he won the sprint championship gold in Vantaa.
The beginning of the season was more difficult, as in the free sprint in Davos the ranking was 23rd, in Toblach and Trondheim 25th. In the traditional sprint, he has been ninth at best in Ruka on these snows.
Finished fourth in the time trial Lauri Vuorinen skied 4/5 in the quarter-finals, and didn’t make it to the next round.
– I could have made it to the next round if I had had enough speed at the end. It’s great, but an extremely tight track, Vuorinen said on Viaplay.
Vuorinen was third in his heat and missed the next place by five hundredths. Skied in the same quarter-final Niilo Moilanen was jumbo. He missed the next place by a good second.
Vuorinen has been in the free mc sprints twice in the semi-finals of the top twelve this winter. The top rating is Toblach’s seventh place.

Johannes Kläbo took his third win in the fifth free mc sprint of the season on Saturday in Canada. The two races that Kläbo did not win were at the Tour de Ski. The Norwegian was sidelined from the Central European tour due to a health problem.
Director of the Spintticup Erik Valnes was the second one on Saturday.
Sweden, who reached the final from the back door Edvin Anger got his second ball place of the season in his third place. The Swede qualified from the top six, but was able to participate as a substitute, when twice this season won the free sprint Lucas Chanavat was rejected. The French was considered to have wedged Sweden by Johan Häggström inside out.
