Conor McGregor’s the return match is now a sure thing – if the man’s own words are to be believed.
The Irish freestyle star kept his promise and revealed the exact details of his UFC return on New Year’s Eve.
In a video shot over a glass of wine, McGregor announced that he will return to the UFC cage in Las Vegas on June 29. According to him, the annual International Fight Week event will be held then.
– My opponent is Michael ChandlerMcGregor gushed.
Then we heard the biggest surprise: McGregor and Chandler will fight at 83.9 kilograms, in the middleweight division. After the announcement, McGregor laughed uproariously.
The UFC has not confirmed the bout on any of its channels, not even the June 29 fight night. In addition, fighting in the middleweight division sounds absurd for McGregor and Chandler.
The American Chandler is used to seeing two weight classes lower, in the lightweight division.
Also, McGregor has not previously fought in the UFC at over 80 kilograms. The Irishman is a former featherweight and lightweight champion. In addition, he has fought three times in the intermediate division, i.e. in the 77.1-kilogram category.
A matchup between McGregor and Chandler has been anticipated since they served as coaches for the most recent season of The Ultimate Fighter.
McGregor’s fall from the top of the freestyle has been hard. A new attempt at the top began in 2020, when he won by knockout Donald Cerrone. However, he lost twice after that For Dustin Poirier. The latter, a July 2021 encounter, will be McGregor’s fight visit to the UFC.
