Amsterdam’s Tes Schouten takes world title in 200 meter breaststroke

Tes Schouten won the world title in the 200 meter breaststroke with great conviction. The 23-year-old swimmer from Amsterdam beat her major competitor Kate Douglass in 2.19.81. The American, who took silver in Japan last summer, finished second in 2.20.91. Sydney Pickrem from Canada came third (2.22.94).

Earlier in the day, Marrit Steenbergen won the first Dutch individual medal at the World Championships since 2013.

Schouten surprisingly swam to silver in the 100 meter breaststroke on Tuesday, her lesser number. Her finishing time in the World Cup final of the 200 meter backstroke was a major improvement on her own Dutch record. She improved that to 2.21.50 on Thursday.

The Amsterdam native was not bothered by former world champion Tatjana Schoemaker in Doha. The South African chose – like many others – to skip the World Cup with a view to the Olympic Games in Paris.
