The municipality of Amsterdam expanded the so-called safety risk area in the capital on Sunday. The decision, published on Sunday morning on the website of the municipality, falls on the day that a large anti-asylum demonstration takes place on Museumplein.

The municipality writes Sunday morning that it was decided to establish a safety risk area for part of the center between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. due to “possible disruption of public order.” This concerns areas around Central Station, Damrak, Prins Hendrikkade, Nieuwmarkt, Dam and Rembrandtplein. This stamp also applies to Museumplein, but that was before proclaimed.

The police may and may search people in these areas. There is also a ban on wearing face-covering clothing.

The anti-asylum demonstration was moved from Dam Square to Museumplein earlier this week by the Amsterdam triangle – the mayor, the chief public prosecutor and the chief commissioner of the police. A counter-demonstration has also been announced in Amsterdam.

It will be busy in Amsterdam on Sunday: at six o’clock in the evening the Dutch national team will play a World Cup qualifier against Finland in the Amsterdam Arena. As a precaution close the Van Gogh Museum closes its doors on Sunday.
