Amsterdam crime figures give rise to gloom: “We are facing a massive problem”

Fewer burglaries and street robberies, but otherwise there was little encouraging to report this afternoon about the annual trend picture of crime in Amsterdam.

“I am a positive person by nature,” says Chief Public Prosecutor René de Beukelaer at the Stopera, “but I can follow you very well in the gloom. I think it is a really massive problem that we face in Amsterdam.”

“Drug crime remains the biggest problem unabated and unchanged”

Femke Halsema – Mayor of Amsterdam

This afternoon the Amsterdam triangle (mayor, Public Prosecution Service and police) presented the trend for this year based on the figures and developments in the crime area in 2021. And drug crime in particular continues to be a major cause for concern. “Young people who end up in crime really early and then really into serious crime. Serious criminals who have a lot of money to act in that world and pay bills if they don’t like each other,” says De Beukelaer.

“We see what happens underwater”

Frank Paauw – Amsterdam Police Commissioner

The frustrating thing for the crime fighters: they want to do more, but have been short of people and resources for a long time. “So we see what happens underwater,” said police commissioner Frank Paauw about intercepted data from criminals. “If you see what we have lying around: these are not declarations, but information packages that we can use. You can inflict much more blows on organized crime there than we do now.”
