Amstelveen traffic artery will remain closed all weekend due to renovation work on the A9 viaduct

Work on the A9 viaduct over the Amstelveense Beneluxbaan will have major consequences for traffic in the municipality this weekend. The Beneluxbaan is closed at the viaduct, just like the Ouverture parallel road. As a result, motorists have to make significant detours. Tram 25 is also not running due to the closure.

Traffic heading south and vice versa will be diverted via Groen van Prinstererlaan and Keizer Karelweg or Oranjebaan and Burgemeester Boersweg. Pedestrians and cyclists can pass the highway near the A9 viaduct. The (other parallel road) Keerpuntweg has been opened for them.

Due to the arrival of Sinterklaas in the Amstelveen city center, it is now even busier than usual. Nevertheless, the diversion routes can handle the traffic well, Remco de Korte of Rijkswaterstaat told NH. “According to the traffic control center, there is no extreme crowds.”

Tram 25

Because GVB tram line 25 from Amsterdam-Zuid to Amstelveen Westwijk cannot run due to the closure of the viaduct, the transport company recommends using other tram lines or the bus.

It will take three years (according to plan) before the viaduct is completely renovated. This weekend the girders – on which the new road surface will be installed – will be placed on the south side of the viaduct. Those old girders were lifted out in June.

Last weekend, work was being done on the Schiphol Bridge, which meant that the A9 was open to a limited extent. There was one temporary bridge deck liftedwhich gives Rijkswaterstaat the space to replace the old bridge decks, without completely closing the A9.

To limit the inconvenience, Rijkswaterstaat and contractor VeenIX work at night and on weekends and in stages. All traffic on the A9 therefore recently drove via the lanes on the north side of the viaduct. Once the south side is completed, traffic can continue to move there when the north side is widened. The Beneluxbaan will open again on Monday morning at 6:00 am.
