Amstelveen is back in the list of Boston, Paris, Amsterdam, New York and Rotterdam. After a few canceled editions, the municipality will be the setting for the Spring Marathon tomorrow. Participants and visitors can expect a ‘great running experience’, the organization promises. However, the event also causes some inconvenience. NH News lists the most important things about the Spring Marathon for you.
The driving force behind the marathon is Athletics Association Startbaan, where runner and marketer Roy van Damme decided to revive the event after corona. Thanks to him and countless colleagues and volunteers, the fourth edition will be a fact tomorrow.
Attendees
The marathon course takes the participants throughout the municipality. From the Stadshart to the Amsterdamse Bos and from the Oude Dorp to the Amstel: during the route of more than 42 kilometers, the runners pass all the hotspots of Amstelveen, as shown in the image below.
The so-called Lopersplein in the Stadshart opens at 7:30 am, the marathon starts there at 9:00 am. In addition to individual runners, relay teams also participate, with four runners each covering 10.5 kilometers.
Other distances
In addition to the classic marathon distance, other distances are also on the program, including the half marathon (21.1 kilometers). Participants in this distance start at 10:00 am.
There are also routes of ten and five kilometers. The ten-kilometer route starts at 1:15 PM. The one of five kilometers at 1.30 pm. All distances – from the marathon to the five kilometers – pass through the Oude Dorp.
For children there is a route of 750 meters or 1.5 kilometers through the Stadshart shopping center at noon. “They can finally run through the shopping center without a strict mom or dad,” says spokesman Thomas Nekkers of the organization.

Spectators
There is also plenty to do for spectators, Nekkers guarantees. Entrepreneurs on the Stadsplein, where the participants start and finish, provide music, snacks and drinks. After the marathon there is a party on the Amsterdamseweg.
There is no travel advice. Those who come to Amstelveen to run or encourage runners can do so by public transport. The parking garages around the Stadshart are also accessible, but some roads around the course are closed for shorter or longer periods (see below).
