Amstelveen mayor angry after battle by rioters: ‘Unacceptable behaviour’

Mayor Tjapko Poppens of Amstelveen reacts angrily to the disturbances around the party center at the Touwslagerij last night. There, rioters caused a battle: first there was a fight with security guards, later the group also turned against the police and officers were attacked. “The behavior of these partygoers is unacceptable,” Poppens said.

A party in a party center in Amstelveen got completely out of hand last night. Rioters there raged, started fighting and clashed with security, among other things. Dozens of police officers with dogs came to the party center at the Touwslagerij, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee was called in to help.

The area had been restless all night, after which it escalated around 2.30 am. Rioters started fighting and later attacked the police as well. One of the rioters drove his car into officers.

One of the officers was injured by a rock in his lower leg and was taken to hospital for a check-up.

Still plenty of research

The mayor says he is taking the matter seriously. He describes the behavior of the partygoers as ‘unacceptable’. “The destruction caused in public space in Westwijk is also intolerable,” said Poppens.

Police are currently investigating last night’s incident and are also looking at the damage caused by the rioters.

Poppens: “Tonight 24 people were arrested who are still detained. The police are investigating, during which the organizer of the party and the operator of the party center are also being discussed. Furthermore, the damage is recovered from the perpetrators as much as possible.”
