Amstel Gold Race equalizes women’s prize money with men | cycling

The adjustment means that the winner will earn 16,000 euros for both men and women.

“That is a big step forward. In total, the prize money for the women, as with the men, is 40,000 euros this year. That is 30,000 more than last year. A significant increase, therefore,” says Leontien van Moorsel, race director Amstel Gold Race. “If you see where women’s cycling comes from and where we are now, it really makes a world of difference. The development to get more equality in cycling has taken off in recent years. And here we really want to be in the leading group. I am very proud that we are constantly taking innovative steps in the Amstel Gold Race and taking on a leading role.”

Among the women, last year’s winner Marianne Vos, Annemiek van Vleuten and Demi Vollering are at the start. The Team SD Worx rider finished second in the Amstel Gold Race last year. “I am really looking forward to Sunday, all those people on the side provide so many goosebumps. Especially when you drive up the iconic Cauberg. We had to miss that last year. I hope this just gives the extra helping hand to be the first to cross the finish line this year”, says Vollering.

Steps taken

“In recent years, we have repeatedly taken steps to achieve greater equality in the Amstel Gold Race,” Dijkhuizen explained. „From the playful action with the lap misters, to a joint team presentation of men and women, which was unique in cycling. In addition, we have gradually increased the prize money in recent years and we will make it completely equal for the men and women from the upcoming edition.”

Leo van Vliet, race director Amstel Gold Race: „The past few years have been tough, we have had to continuously adapt to the situation. Now that everything is ‘normal’ again, we can organize another Amstel Gold Race as everyone is used to from us.”
