Editorial board

Banning specific breeds of dogs within a country or territory is not that unusual and today there are many countries in the world that over the years have decided to ban, except in particular cases, the rproduction and possession of dog specimens who have been the protagonists of a greater number of attacks against human beings than average, such as American Bully XL which have recently been at the center of public debate in the United Kingdom.

The UK decision

The last country in chronological order to impose a new ban is the United Kingdom, where the Dangerous Dogs Act has been in force since 1991 with which an attempt was made to put a stop to the possession and reproduction of specimens of Shear, American pit bull terrier, Dogo Argentino And Fila brasileiro. After 32 years, the United Kingdom is preparing to update the list of dogs considered dangerous, and therefore illegal in the country, by including purebred dogs American Bully XLperfected in the 1990s in the United States starting from American pit bull terriers.

American XL Bully to be banned by the end of the year

The decision, which will come effective at the end of 2023, has come under pressure after a series of attacks, some fatal, in the UK over the past two years. In 2022, six of the 10 attacks carried out by dogs with fatal results for humans involved American Bully XL specimens, while in 2023 they were three fatal attacks were reported throughout the United Kingdom by specimens of this breed not officially recognized by the Royal Kennel Club.

Despite appeals from organizations like the same Royal Kennel Clubthe Blue Cross and the RSPCA who promote animal welfare and argue that dogs should be judged based on one’s actions and not based on racepolitics has moved and the official announcement has arrived in these hours directly from the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak.

What will happen to American Bully XL

The inclusion of the American Bully XL in the list of banned dogs in the United Kingdom will come into force by the end of the year and from that moment all American Bully XL specimens can be seized by the police and suppressed unless the owners of the animals present one request for exemption in court. At that point a judge will be asked to make a series of assessments, based on the past behavior of the specimen and its owner who must be judged capable of taking care of the animal.

Not only. The dog will have to be sterilized and microchipped and can only be carried around if equipped with a muzzle and leash so as to minimize possible damage in the event of attacks. Following a positive evaluation, the court will grant the owner of an American Bully XL specimen an exemption certificate which will remain valid for the entire life of the animal.
