American singer Aaron Carter was found dead on Saturday at the age of 34 in his home in Lancaster, near Los Angeles, California. The local police confirmed that to American media. Aaron was the younger brother of ‘Backstreet Boy’ Nick and became popular at a very young age in the late 1990s. He scored a hit with the song I Want Candy.
Aaron Carter released his debut album in 1997 at the age of nine with the song crush on you and then acted as support act for the tour of the Backstreet Boys, the world famous American boy band of his brother, among others. He also sang – nevertheless – in the opening act of a few concerts by Britney Spears. As a teen pop star, Carter appeared regularly on the children’s television channel Nickelodeon. He also had a small supporting role in the teen series Lizzy McGuire, starring Hillary Duff. Later in his music career, Carter started rapping, but had less success with it.
It is unknown what the cause of death was. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, there appears to be no known crime. Carter struggled with addiction problems for years. He has made this public several times. In a television interview in 2019, for example, he talked about his drug use, and said that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, depression and anxiety disorders, among other things.
That same year, Nick Carter asked another contact ban against his younger brother. Aaron would have threatened both his own sister and Nick’s pregnant wife with death. “In light of Aaron’s increasingly alarming behaviour, we had no choice,” the Backstreetboy said in a response to the BBC at the time. “We love our brother and hope he gets the proper treatment he needs before anything happens to him or anyone else.” Aaron’s family has not yet commented on his death.
