American teacher fired after asking students to write their own obituary | Abroad

An American psychology teacher has lost his job after giving high school students a curious topic for an essay: “Today was the last day of your life, write your obituary”. Jeffrey Keene, 63, stated on Facebook that he wanted to tie his lesson into an exercise to prepare students for the risk of an armed intruder at their high school near Orlando, Florida.

The day after a simulated evacuation, Keene asked his students to “write down their impressions of the simulation and think about causes and solutions to the many murders in the United States. He also asked them to prepare their own obituaries for A small note read “be aware (…) that I am not doing this to frighten you.”

He was fired on Tuesday. In a statement reproduced by the American media, the school authorities accused him of giving an “improper assignment” to his students.

He defended himself on local television stations. “It wasn’t to scare them or make them think they were going to die, but to help them understand what’s important in their lives,” he told NBC. His dismissal “baffled” him, he added on Fox 5: “I talked to students about the world they live in, about guns, about gunmen…”

Firearms became the leading cause of death for U.S. minors in 2020, with 4,368 deaths, ahead of car accidents and overdoses. So stated the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). School shootings are only a small part of this, but are very prominent.
