The fatal victim, according to Ukrainian agent Brent Renaud. “In addition to the killed Brent (51) two more correspondents were injured. They have been taken to hospital. Their health is unknown,” the police chief wrote on Facebook.

American journalist Juan Arredondo is said to have witnessed the drama. In a video circulating on social media (which you can watch above), Arredondo says from a hospital bed that he and others were on their way to film refugees trying to get out of Kiev when they were suddenly shot at.

“Someone offered us a lift to the other bridge and at a checkpoint they started shooting at us. The driver turned around but they kept firing at us. We were two. My friend is Brent Renaud. He was shot and we had to leave him behind.” Arredondo says in the video that he does not know how Renaud is doing.

Images also circulate on Twitter of an injured man being removed under a bridge.

Police chief Andrej Nebitovis’ Facebook post also included a video showing a police officer wearing a bulletproof vest with the body of a man lying on his back at the shooting site.

A now-blocked image showed a New York Times press card with a photo of Renaud and the “video journalist” category.

An executive of the newspaper reported on Twitter that The New York Times was “deeply saddened” to learn of the news of Renaud’s death.

“Brent was a talented photographer and filmmaker, but he was not commissioned by the newspaper in Ukraine. Although he has contributed to the Times in the past (most recently in 2015), he was not in Ukraine for any of the newspaper’s editors. Initial reports that he worked for the Times was based on a newspaper press card issued years ago for a job,” said deputy editor-in-chief Cliff Levy.

Renaud worked as a writer, documentary and film maker and photojournalist, according to information about him on the internet. He worked with his brother for HBO, NBC, Discovery, PBS, the NYTimes and ViceNews. Together they founded the Little Rock Film Festival in the American state of Arkansas, according to their Twitter account.
