After a swimming accident in Florida, ex-NFL star Peyton Hillis was able to save his children’s lives – but put his own at risk. The former American football pro is in intensive care.

Hillis rescued his children after a swimming accident in Pensacola, Florida and was then flown to a local hospital by helicopter. It is said that his breathing has improved slightly. Also a post on Facebookbelieved to be from Hillis’ uncle, states that Peyton “is getting better”.

“He is still in intensive care and has some problems with his kidneys and lungs, but doctors say he’s doing better,” the post reads. “I just wanted to forestall any rumors that might be circulated. I’m sure he wants everyone to know that he appreciates all the prayers that are meant for him.”

Ex-NFL star Hillis publicized his battle with depression in 2015

The running back played in the NFL for years. The 36-year-old made his debut in 2008 after being drafted by the Denver Broncos. He played there for two seasons.

Other stints included the Cleveland Browns (2010–2011), Kansas City Chiefs (2012), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2013) and New York Giants (2013–2014). He gained notoriety at the latest when he adorned the cover of the video game “Madden 12”.

Hillis retired in 2015 at his doctor’s request due to his history of concussions and ended his career.

But not being able to practice his beloved sport caused big problems: In the same year he spoke to the US magazine “Bleacher Report” about his struggles with depression. (jlu)
