American eats 34,000 Big Macs and breaks record: ‘People thought I would be dead by now’ | Bizarre

It’s probably the coolest record anyone can have: eating the most Big Macs in a lifetime. The 70-year-old American Don Gorske ate a total of more than 34,000, making him the most hamburger buns in the world, according to the Guinness World Records. “A lot of people thought I would be dead by now.”

Gorske has been eating Big Macs, McDonald’s famous hamburgers, for 52 years. His love for the burger started on May 17, 1972, when he ate his first copy. “At that moment I said to myself: I’m probably going to eat this for the rest of my life,” he says in an interview with Guinness World Records. “I threw the packages on the back seat and started counting how many I ate.” To this day, the American has kept all the boxes and receipts of all the Big Macs he ate since that one day in 1972.

According to the latest official count from Guinness World Records, Gorske already has a total of 34,128 citizens, significantly increasing his previous record of 25,000 citizens in 2011 and 30,000 in 2018. “A lot of people thought I would be dead by now, but instead I’m a record holder Guinness World Book of Records and I think that’s quite cool,” says the former prison guard about his special title.

To walk

There was a time when Gorske ate about nine burgers a day, but that number has now been reduced to two – one with lunch and one with dinner. Besides the burgers, Gorske eats almost nothing else, except a small snack in the evening, such as ice cream or a bag of chips. To stay healthy and keep the scales in check, the man walks about 10 kilometers every day.

After all these years, no one in Gorske’s surroundings is surprised by his love for hamburgers. His colleagues even helped him get Big Macs when he had long shifts and therefore couldn’t leave to order food. The man’s mother worried about his eating habits for the longest time. “Out of respect for my mother, I ate something every day for eight years that wasn’t a Big Mac. She was concerned about my health. But after eight years she said, ‘If those things haven’t killed you by now, just go ahead’.”

One Big Mac contains about 557 calories and 15 grams of fat. Over the past 52 years, Gorske has gained more than 19 million calories and 510,000 grams of fat. Yet the man, who proposed to his wife in the parking lot of the local McDonald’s, continues to enjoy his meal. “I still like them, yes. People who see me eating a Big Mac often say it looks like it’s my very first. That’s how I am. If I like something, I stick to it.”
