America denies accident with atomic bomb in Volkel: ‘Photo comes from a folder’

There has been ‘absolutely no accident’ with an atomic bomb at Volkel Air Base. So says the US Department of Defense. It responds to messages about a photo doing the rounds. It would show a damaged nuclear bomb at Volkel Air Base. It is not the first time that there has been a fuss about a photo of posing soldiers near an ‘atomic bomb’ on Volkel.

“We are aware of a news story that a photo has been found of US military personnel inspecting a damaged B61 nuclear bomb following an accident at a NATO base,” reports Oscar P. Seára. He is a spokesman for the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon. “This is absolutely untrue,” he continues his response. It is absolutely not true, is his point. The spokesperson responded via the NOS.

“Practice Weapon”
“As can be read in the article, the photo comes from a recruitment brochure from 2022. What you see is students doing routine training with an unarmed training weapon. It is preparation to work in a special team,” the spokesperson writes.

The brief official statement came early Monday night, around noon in Washington. The Pentagon does not comment on reports that the photo was taken at Volkel. That was also not to be expected, because both the Ministry of Defense in The Hague and the Pentagon never comment on whether or not there are nuclear weapons on Volkel, because that is a secret.

Rather fuss
Scientists came earlier in the day with the suspicion that an accident must have happened somewhere with an atomic bomb. They also tracked down the place and concluded that it must be Volkel.

The fuss about the ‘damaged nuclear bomb’ is reminiscent of the commotion of a few years ago. Then there was also a photo that was much discussed: American soldiers around an atomic bomb. Possibly also made on Volkel. That also involved a fake bomb, a practice model, was the identical response at the time.
