The online shipping giant Amazon wants to do more to combat illegal streaming with the Fire TV Stick. As The Atlantic writes, apps on Fire TV Stick devices that have been identified as enabling illegal streaming should be blocked. This is specifically about sports broadcasts.
The Atlantic points to data from YouGov Sport, according to which around 4.7 million adults in Great Britain watched illegal streams in Great Britain in the last six months. Of these, 31 percent used a Fire Stick or a similar Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) device.
Open development software as a gateway
In fact, sports rights holders and other broadcasters have long been complaining about previous versions of the Fire TV Stick due to their open development software. This allows third parties to load unauthorized apps that provide illegal streaming platforms onto the system. In particular, these are often subscription services that are much cheaper than legal sports providers.
Just last month, Amazon launched a new Fire TV Stick that comes with improved security measures thanks to the new Vega operating system. Nevertheless, the mail order company wants to introduce restrictions for both new and old devices. However, registered developers will still be allowed to use the Fire Stick for legitimate purposes.
“Piracy is illegal and we have always worked to ban it from our app store,” an Amazon spokesperson told The Athletic. “We will now block apps proven to provide access to pirated content, including those downloaded outside of our app store. This is part of our ongoing efforts to support creators and protect customers, as piracy can also expose users to malware, viruses and fraud.”
As The Atlantic writes, the rollout has already begun in Germany and France and will be expanded worldwide in the coming weeks and months.
