Amazon goes to court in the fight against fake reviews on the platform in the USA. The lawsuit aims to target admins of more than 10,000 Facebook groups that organize the creation of fake reviews in exchange for money or free products, the online retailer said on Tuesday. The first step is to identify the people behind the groups.
The operators of the groups tried to use the groups to obtain fake reviews for “hundreds” of products on the Amazon platform. The group cited car radios and camera tripods as examples. The ratings were conveyed via the groups in Germany, the USA, Great Britain, France, Italy and Spain, among other places. One group had 43,000 members until it was deleted by the Facebook group Meta this year. Amazon has reported more than 10,000 groups to Meta since 2020. More than half of them have been removed from the platform, others are still under investigation.
Fake reviews have been a problem for Amazon for years. The group stops millions of them before they are seen by users, emphasized Amazon manager Dharmesh Mehta. (dpa)
