The Verdi union is again calling on the Amazon workforce to lay down their jobs. In the logistics center in Winsen (Luhe), work is to be stopped from the late shift on Sunday at 7.30 p.m., as the union announced on Sunday. No work should be done until Tuesday 11:15 p.m. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the online mail order company offers discounts on many products on what is known as Prime Day. Amazon does not expect any restrictions from the work stoppages, the company said.
For years, Verdi has been demanding, among other things, the recognition of the collective bargaining agreements in retail and mail order. Due to the discount campaigns on Prime Day, Amazon employees are faced with a lot of work and overtime again, as more is ordered than usual. On Monday, the union is also calling for a demonstration from Hamburg’s Veddel S-Bahn station to the Amazon distribution center in Veddel.
“Our teams at the logistics locations have prepared themselves conscientiously for the Prime Day campaign days and are ready to process customer orders,” said Amazon. The company offers a progressive work environment with competitive wages. Amazon pointed out that the converted entry-level wage for logistics employees in Germany will be upwards of EUR 14 gross per hour from September, including bonus payments. After two years of service, the average gross salary is 37,000 euros per year. There would also be extras and discounts. (dpa)
