Amarcord Inter-Milan, history of the first derby ever

In via Bronzetti in front of a few spectators Milan won 3-2. And Inter appealed…

On Sunday 10 January 1909, the Corriere della Sera headlined the entire front page: “Relief for the country after the catastrophe”. Southern Italy is on its knees. An earthquake of unprecedented power, on the morning of December 28, devastated the cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria. Over seventy thousand dead. People are desperately trying to find a few more survivors, while subscriptions and donations are collected across the nation. The Corriere, in a few days, puts together more than one million three hundred thousand lire to donate to the populations affected by the tragedy. The government chaired by Giovanni Giolitti implements extraordinary measures to deal with the emergency and obtains broad confidence: only five votes against in Parliament. Italy, which has always stood out for being a fragile and disunited country, demonstrates a remarkable reaction force. It is in this atmosphere, which is anything but idyllic, that the first championship derby between Milan and Internazionale takes place in Milan.
