Amanda Todd extortion: many questions still about extra punishment for Aydin C.

Tilburger Aydin C. (45) does not yet know whether he will have to serve his Canadian prison sentence in the Netherlands. The judge did not rule on Thursday. More information is needed from Canada first. Aydin C. was sentenced to 13 years in prison in Canada last year for extorting Amanda Todd, which led to her suicide.

Amanda Todd took her own life ten years ago at the age of 15. After her death, she gained international fame through a video she posted online. In it she explained that she had been blackmailed with nude images of herself. Aydin C. is held responsible for this.

Aydin C. was arrested in 2014, more than a year and a half after Amanda’s death, at a holiday park in Oisterwijk. Investigations by the Dutch prosecutor showed that 34 underage girls and five adult men were victims of his sexual extortion practices.

Dutch court case
In 2018, the judge here in the Netherlands imposed C. the maximum prison sentence of 10 years and 8 months for distributing child pornography, computer trespass, fraud and possession of hard drugs. He is currently serving this sentence.

Canadian Amanda Todd was one of many young victims. Her case was not included in the court case in the Netherlands. The Public Prosecution Service in Canada wanted to prosecute C. themselves for this. There the Tilburger received a prison sentence of 13 years.

Canadian lawsuit
When he was extradited to Canada for the trial, it was agreed that he could also serve that sentence in the Netherlands. The Public Prosecution Service in the Netherlands asked two weeks ago to convert the Canadian sentence to 4.5 years in prison in the Netherlands.

The current lawsuit revolves around the question of whether the Todd case should be viewed separately from the cases for which C. has already been convicted in the Netherlands. According to the prosecutor, it is a separate case. That would mean that Aydin C. has to serve his Canadian sentence in the Netherlands. The defense of Aydin C. believes that he has also been convicted in the Netherlands for the extortion of Amanda Todd. That would mean that he will no longer receive an additional penalty.

Need more information
The judge would determine this Thursday how much of that Canadian sentence Aydin C. has to serve in the Netherlands. But, says the judge, more information is needed for that.

It is unclear how long Aydin C. should actually have been detained if he had gone to jail in Canada. In Canada, just like in the Netherlands, you do not have to serve your full sentence. Part of the sentence may also be suspended. The public prosecutor must now request that information. The penalty he receives in the Netherlands may never be higher than the ‘net’ penalty in Canada.

Only when that is known will the judge decide whether Aydin C. has to serve his Canadian sentence anyway. Once the information has arrived from Canada, it will take some time before the judge makes a ruling. That will most likely not be until after the summer.
