Bee The Hammerswhere John Heitinga has been the assistant to Scottish coach David Moyes since last summer, former Ajax players Edson Álvarez and Mohammed Kudus played the entire match. They shone for the visitors, who are on a good run with six wins in eight matches. Moreover, after almost 22 years as a coach in the Premier League, Moyes has finally succeeded in winning an away match at a club from the ‘big four’ (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester United).

To achieve this, Moyes needed no fewer than 73 games, of which 23 were against Arsenal. After 51 defeats and 21 draws, Moyes finally managed to coach his team to victory in an away match at a top club. Previously, the 60-year-old Scot was also coach of Everton (eleven years), Manchester United and Sunderland. With 676 matches in the Premier League, Moyes is the most experienced coach in the English competition after Arsène Wenger (828 matches) and Sir Alex Ferguson (810 matches), his compatriot and mentor whom he succeeded at Old Trafford in 2013.

West Ham United took the lead after thirteen minutes through Czech midfielder Tomáš Souček, although there was an extensive VAR moment to see whether the goal was valid. Ultimately, the referee decided that the ball had not yet completely crossed the back line when Jarrod Bowen brought the ball in front of the goal.

Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos headed in the 0-2 ten minutes after half-time from one of James Ward-Prowse’s many excellent corner kicks. Mavropanos celebrated his goal modestly because of his eight matches for Arsenal, where he was under contract from 2018 to 2022.

Arsenal claimed a penalty in the 83rd minute after a minor foul by Angelo Ogbonna on Bukayo Saka, but referee Michael Oliver and the VAR did not think the contact was enough to put the ball on the spot.

In the 95th minute it even seemed like it would be 0-3, but Arsenal keeper David Raya stopped Said Benrahma’s penalty. The ball went to the spot following Declan Rice’s foul on Emerson Palmieri, after the Arsenal midfielder had to recover after slipping.

The 24-year-old midfielder from London left West Ham United for Arsenal last summer for 115 million euros. By attracting Álvarez (43 million euros), Kudus (38 million euros) and Ward-Prowse (34 million euros) and Mavropanos (20 million euros), it appears after six months that West Ham has succeeded well in delaying the departure of Rice to catch. West Ham is now sixth, between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Tottenham Hotspur crashed hard in Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur was able to climb from fifth to third place, but the team of coach Ange Postecoglou lost hard in the south of England at Brighton & Hove Albion: 4-2. At the home club, Zeeland defender Jan Paul van Hecke played the entire match for the tenth time in a row. Bart Verbruggen was on the bench, Joël Veltman is currently out of action with a knee injury. At Spurs, Dutch international Micky van de Ven (22) was still missing due to his hamstring injury that he sustained against Chelsea at the beginning of November.

Brighton was already 2-0 halfway through the first half thanks to a goal by 18-year-old right back Jack Hinshelwood (Veltman’s replacement) and a striking penalty from João Pedro. Ecuadorian left back Pervis Estupiñán made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute and João Pedro even made it 4-0 with his second penalty of the evening in the 75th minute.

Spurs fought back into the match through goals from Argentinian talent Alejo Véliz (his first for Spurs) and defender Ben Davies, but no more goals were scored in the ten minutes of extra time. Spurs remain fifth due to the defeat, Brighton climbs one spot to eighth position in the Premier League. The team of Italian coach Roberto de Zerbi has not yet managed to keep a clean sheet at the back this season.

Tottenham Hotspur can still take revenge this year for the painful defeat on the British south coast, because Bournemouth will visit northeast London on New Year’s Day. Arsenal also plays on New Year’s Eve, the away match at city rivals Fulham. Brighton & Hove Albion are back in action on Tuesday, January 2, when they visit West Ham United at the London Stadium.
