Not just landscapes. L’Upper Garda Trentino is a complete open-air gym, with opportunities for entertainment for all types of sportsmen, from sailing and windsurfing enthusiasts to freeclimbers, and of course hikers and mountain bikers. And it is precisely to the latter that we offer excursions that are not very well known outside the provincial borders but of great gratification.

Alto Garda Trentino: the military posts of Monte Corno

Monte Corno di Nago preserves numerous testimonies related to the First World War: a real fortified hill with trenches, lookout points and other strategic positions of what was once the Austro-Hungarian front line. To reach the summit, you start from Nago and you can make a sort of figure-of-eight itinerary by joining the route of two circuits: the Perlone ring and the Predabusa ring. The first first reaches the fortification of the Fuciliera and then crosses a chestnut grove and reaches the Busa dei Capitani with the remains of the barracks with the command of the military garrison.

Another stop in Tre Croci, at an altitude of 579 metres, a border point where they touch the three municipalities of Nago, Torbole and Ronzo Chienis where there are several detours including the one under the Perlone emplacement, then occupied by small-medium caliber artillery. The galleries and crevices dug into the rock are fascinating. Near the military post there is Predabusa a panoramic spur that deserves the short detour. It’s worth continuing to complete the higher loop and see the military artifacts built higher up. Return by descending on a steep path in the woods with a view of Loppio until you meet the paved road that takes you back to Nago. Total difference in altitude 700 metres. Journey time about 3 and a half hours. Recommended early in the morning for exposure to the sun.

Flowers and panoramas of Monte Brione

A walk suitable for everyone leads to Monte Brione behind Riva del Garda. This is an easy excursion centered on the hill that separates the town of Riva from the town of Torbole and the Sarca valley, close to the northern tip of Lake Garda. It starts from the port of San Nicolò in Riva del Garda heading north along the Path of Peace which leads to the wide crest of the mountain which you follow along its entire length closely observing the military fortifications and especially the blooms of over 500 botanical species that grow in this area, some of which are only present in this place. Then you descend to the valley floor and return to the starting point along the western slopes of Monte Brione covered by extensive olive groves. Distance seven kilometres, total height difference 330 metres. Journey time 2.30 hours.

MegaMarocche for trained bikers

The more trained bikers, on the other hand, have fun on the MegaMarocche circuit which takes its name from the thousands of rocky boulders (the marocche, in fact) that fell towards Lake Cavedine from the walls of Monte Casale following a gigantic landslide during the last glaciation. Today those places are stage of a great mountain bike adventure, which winds along flowing paths that can be enjoyed even by the less experienced. It starts from Ponte Arche first climbing towards Comano and then following the path towards the Sarca gorge. There you meet the Limarò cycle path, one of the most suggestive in Europe, which enters the steep and very deep gorge offering spectacular views.

With a short paved stretch you then reach the cavedine lake which you skirt along a beautiful path in the woods. Another sector of asphalt leads up to the road to Drena, uphill to the castle. Arrived at the small parking lot of San Siro, you return to Lake Cavedine alongside the walls loved by free climbers. The descent is not trivial, better pay close attention. Finally we return to the Limarò cycle path, along the Sarca gorge, from where you return to the starting point. In all there are 57 km with 1,420 meters of difference in altitude. Time required 7.30 hours.
