Alternatives to repair service: Apple Self-Repair or on-site service

Defective Apple devices usually had to either be sent in or taken to a repair service. But the company now offers its customers other options for repairing their devices.

Repair at home instead of in the Apple Store

Whether it’s a cracked display, a defective home button or a battery that no longer does its job: Apple promises to repair the damage to customers’ iPhones. Either free of charge during the warranty period, discounted with the AppleCare+ insurance package or for a corresponding price. In order to use this service, customers previously had to visit an Apple retail store or an Apple service partner with a certified Apple technician. According to their own information, the number of Apple repair locations has almost doubled in the last three years. According to Apple, eight out of ten customers in Europe can reach an authorized service provider within 30 minutes.

In the USA, Apple also offers its users the service of having a technician come to the customer’s home to carry out the repair. However, the on-site service may incur additional costs for customers compared to the repair costs in the store. In addition, the service has other restrictions: it does not apply to all devices – only the repair of iPhones is included in the new service. So far, Apple has only offered the new service option in the USA and only in six cities as a test. Customers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston and Dallas can select at-home repair service from Apple’s support site. The service is not yet available in Germany. It is not yet clear whether it will be extended to European countries.

Another option is self-repair

If you are a bit tech-savvy and prefer to take care of the problem yourself, you can use the new Apple self-service repair service. Consumers no longer have to visit the repair service, but can take care of the matter themselves with detailed instructions. With this service, consumers have more than 200 individual parts and tools, including repair instructions, at their disposal. So far, however, customers can only buy replacement parts for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 and for MacBooks with an Apple chip. The program is available in eight European countries, including Germany. According to Apple, the replacement parts are the same parts and are priced the same as those available from Apple’s official repair providers. Customers can return replaced parts to Apple for credit. If you don’t have your own tools, you can also rent a tool rental kit from Apple for EUR 59.95 per week.
