Alternative solution to the goalkeeper question? That’s why Kasper Schmeichel didn’t come

Before FC Bayern wrapped up the transfer of Yann Sommer in January, the German record champions also worked intensively on another goalkeeper: Kasper Schmeichel from OGC Nice. Now the background has leaked out as to why the decision was ultimately against the Danish national keeper.

In mid-January, FC Bayern accepted Yann Sommer’s commitment after weeks of poker transfers. The Munich team transferred around eight million to Borussia Mönchengladbach for the 34-year-old Swiss player and gave him a two-year contract until June 30, 2025.

Sommer was supposed to compensate for Manuel Neuer’s absence at Bayern – which, as is now clear, was more bad than good. The performances of the goalkeeper, who is only 1.83 meters tall, in the Bundesliga second jersey are too shaky for the transfer to be considered a complete success.

As already known, Sommer wasn’t the only serious candidate for Neuer’s representation. The flirt with Kasper Schmeichel from OGC Nice is said to have been particularly intense.

Kasper Schmeichel apparently wanted to switch to Bayern Munich

As the “kicker” now reports, those responsible at FC Bayern even wanted to present the long-time Premier League keeper with an offer that was ready to be signed.

Schmeichel would therefore have been willing to move to Munich – for six months, until Neuer’s predicted return after the current season.

According to the specialist magazine, however, the then head coach Julian Nagelsmann and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic were unanimous in their opposition to signing the 36-year-old Danish national goalkeeper and in favor of summer.

Background: Both allegedly wanted a German-speaking goalkeeper, whose contract also runs for more than half a year.
