Also excess mortality in August, mainly due to deceased nursing home residents

As in May, June and July, excess mortality took place last month. It reports that Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) based on preliminary mortality figures. The excess mortality was mainly caused by the fact that more people over 80 and nursing home residents died than expected.

For the study, the researchers looked at the death rates from 2015 to 2019, i.e. before the corona pandemic, and the number of deaths in the past month. The excess mortality in August amounted to more than 1,300 people.

Earlier this week it turned out that researchers do not know what is causing the excess mortality that the Netherlands has been dealing with for six months. Scientists who do research on this do not have enough data in their hands to come to a conclusion. For example, they do not receive data about corona infections and vaccinations from the RIVM and the GGD because they cannot share this data due to privacy legislation.

Independent Member of Parliament Pieter Omtzigt recently submitted a motion in response to the excess mortality. The government therefore ordered an investigation. However, the scientists have no overviews of who has or has not been vaccinated, which is why they say the motion is “not feasible”. According to RIVM, “the ball is now in The Hague” and the Ministry of Health must give permission to release the data after all.
