The British Weather Service has issued a code red for the south east of England, including London, because of storm Eunice. The southwest of the United Kingdom had already been warned of the strong winds a day earlier. The storm made landfall there Friday morning.
British people are being urged to stay at home as the storm rages across the country. The Met Office, the British version of the KNMI, warns, among other things, about flying objects. With gusts of wind up to 145 kilometers per hour, that can endanger lives.
There is not often a code red warning about bad weather conditions in the United Kingdom. Code red has been issued for almost all of the south, in other parts of the country code yellow and orange applies. Local media describe Eunice as arguably one of the worst storms in three decades.
Storm Eunice comes almost immediately after Storm Dudley, which has already caused nuisance in the United Kingdom in recent days. As a precaution, schools and outdoor locations were closed on Friday in parts of the country. There is also less or no public transport.
