Also next weekend, Schiphol airport will have to “do everything possible” to cope with the crowds, says a spokesperson. Not only do many holidaymakers return, it also promises to be busy with regard to departing passengers. The problems are partly caused by staff shortages.
It is not yet known whether airlines will again be asked to reduce the number of flights in order to reduce crowds. According to the spokesperson, “all options are on the table”, but nothing has yet been decided on concrete measures.
Due to the large crowds, Schiphol asked airlines to reduce the number of travelers for last weekend. On Saturday it worked somewhat. Not on Sunday. It will also remain busy in the coming days of the so-called May holiday, which runs this week. Schiphol previously warned that travelers could experience delays.
At the start of the Dutch holiday, Schiphol was also struggling with the consequences of a strike among KLM staff, in addition to large crowds and shortages of people. That led to chaos at the airport. Dozens of flights were delayed or canceled at all.
Due to the corona pandemic, the airport is struggling with major staff shortages. People lost their jobs during the pandemic because of fewer flights for nearly two years. And not everyone has returned to their old job. Last week, Brussels Airport also launched a recruitment campaign to fill more than 1,000 jobs.
