Alpine skiing World Cup medalist Elena Fanchini died at the age of 37

Italian skier Elena Fanchini has died of cancer.

An Italian who has achieved success in alpine skiing Elena Fanchini has died at the age of 37, reports La Repubblica. Fanchini died at home in Brescia, Italy.

Fanchini was going to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, but had to give up her goal due to a cancer diagnosis. The Italian tried to return to the World Cup level the following year without success and announced three years ago that he was ending his career.

Fanchin’s last race was the December 2017 World Cup race in Val-d’Isère.

The Italian national team athlete got an excellent start to his alpine career when he won the World Cup silver in Santa Caterina downhill in 2005 and won the World Cup competition in Lake Louise in the same year.

He took his second career victory in Cortina in 2015. Italian top scorer Sofia Goggia dedicated his latest win at Cortina to Fanchini.
