Small crystal ball: Shiffrin in pole position
With this, Shiffrin also positions himself in the fight for the small crystal ball. She is currently 41 points behind leader Sara Hector (522 points). Tessa Worley (517) follows closely behind. Both athletes did not bring a good first run down into the valley. Worley was 8th (+1.60 seconds), Hector only 13th (+2.10)
Shiffrin would take 100 points with a possible win. According to the current status, that would be enough to outperform Hector and Worley and, after the overall World Cup, to also secure victory in the overall ranking in the giant slalom.
Shiffrin almost flawless – Worley and Hector knocked off
With start number two, Shiffrin set the first target time for the competition. The American made a small technical mistake at the beginning on the sun-drenched but still icy slope, but was able to make up for it in the middle part thanks to speed and a tactically disciplined performance (1:06.32 minutes).
Things didn’t go as planned for Worley and Hector. While Worley gave up time in the more technically demanding lower section, Hector’s fall at the last World Cup in Are was noticeable. The Swede had to make several corrections and ended up well behind Shiffrin.
Brignone did much better. The winner of the small crystal ball in Super-G attacked straight away and was even in the lead at times. In the lower part of the track, however, she was unable to compete with Shiffrin’s strong performance and lost almost a second.
