Alpine skiing | Kira Weidle despairs: “I’ll try everything”

Things are currently not going well for German ski star Kira Weidle. She looks for solutions – including from a former teammate.

In Crans-Montana, Switzerland, the Italian Marta Bassino (1:26.84) won the downhill on Saturday. German ski ace Kira Weidle had nothing to do with the podium, which was completed by her teammate Federica Brignone (+0.54) and the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami (+1.11). She finished distantly in 18th place (+2.26).

Weidle was not satisfied with her race and is currently unable to achieve a top placement. After the descent she said on ZDF: “I didn’t really get going. I wasn’t able to generate any speed. Relatively disappointing result for me too.”

“We continue searching”

On Friday, Weidle took 22nd place at the World Cup downhill in Switzerland. At the last Super-G in Cortina d’Ampezzo she finished 10th. In the downhill race in Italy she was 16th at the end of January. She was eliminated from the second race. Weidle is looking for her form.

She explained on Saturday morning: “We keep looking, we keep working. I try everything, something new every day. Standing still doesn’t help either. Keep going and hopefully it will work out at some point.”

Weidle meets with Rebensburg

DSV Alpine Director Wolfang Maier also said in an interview with t-online: “Kira is currently not fully meeting her personal expectations. She has set higher goals for herself than she can achieve at the moment. She is among the absolute best in the world, but she still has to She can sharpen one or two topics in a different way in order to really get to where she would like to be. Namely, on the podium.”

Weidle said on Saturday morning that she would meet her former teammate and 2010 Olympic champion Viktoria Rebensburg for coffee later in the day and possibly get some tips. Rebensburg was a successful German ski racer and had to end her career in 2020 due to a knee injury.
