As of: January 12, 2024 12:30 p.m

Cornelia Hütter celebrated her first success of the season at the home World Cup in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee. In the Super-G, the 31-year-old Austrian rewarded herself for a courageous ride while Kira Weidle struggled with the consequences of a fall in training. Emma Aicher was eliminated on course for the podium.

Hütter won on the very demanding and strenuous route on the Gamskogel by a narrow margin ahead of the Norwegian Kajsa Vickhoff Lie (+0.09s) and the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami (+0.21s). In the absence of the overall World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin, who was ill, it was the fifth World Cup victory in Hütter’s career.

Brignone beaten – Goggia falls

The strong Italians also had to admit defeat this time. Sofia Goggia, the leader in the Super-G World Cup, fell in the technical section before the finish but was uninjured. Compatriot Federica Brignone, winner in Val-d’Isère, also had to settle for fourth place (+0.32s) after minor driving errors. World champion Marta Bassino came fifth (+0.45).

Weidle with a handbrake after a fall in training

Kira Weidle was the second athlete to take to the track and came in 13th place after a solid ride without the last risk. The 27-year-old from SC Starnberg fell the day before during training for the downhill run and landed in the safety fence. She hadn’t done anything physically, but a few hours before the start she wasn’t “100 percent sure” whether she could do the Super-G.

The 2021 vice world champion was satisfied with her ride given the circumstances: “After my training crash, I was happy that I was able to be at the start.” For her, it was “important to ski cleanly and get a feel for the snow and the ski.” The departure takes place on Saturday from 10.45 a.m.

Aicher is eliminated on course for the podium

Emma Aicher had to wait a long time at the start. Directly in front of the native Swede, the Austrian Nadine Fest had a serious fall and had to be transported away by helicopter. Until the last split time she was only 0.15 seconds behind the best time.

But then the 20-year-old’s outside ski got away before a left-hand bend and she missed the subsequent goal. At the last Super-G race in Val-d’Isère/France almost four weeks ago, Weidle and Aicher finished in the top 10.
