Alpine skiing: Heavy fall overshadows Super G

Ski racer Andreas Sander (Ennepetal) took an excellent fifth place in the Super-G in Lake Louise, Canada, on Sunday as the best German starter.

“I’m very satisfied. In one section I didn’t stay on train that much,” said Sander, who met the World Cup norm: “All in all, a great start to the season. I’m looking very positively at next week.”

Thomas Dreßen (Mittenwald), who had shown a remarkable World Cup comeback the day before as eighth in the downhill after a two and a half year break, missed the points in his weaker discipline when Swiss Marco Odermatt won in 31st place. Simon Jocher (Garmisch) was 14th, Romed Baumann (Kiefersfelden) 17th and Josef Ferstl (Hammer) 27th.

The outstanding Odermatt, leader in the overall World Cup, won ahead of Aleksander Aamodt Kilde from Norway (+0.37 seconds), who won the downhill on Saturday. Third was Matthias Mayer (Austria/+0.78).

The Swiss Mauro Caviezel fell badly on Sunday. The 34-year-old lost control after contact with the goal post, hit his head and sustained injuries to his face. Although Caviezel was able to stand up again after treatment, he was taken away by helicopter after a long break in the race.

The five-time World Cup winner Dreßen had not started in a World Cup since March 2020. Since then, the 29-year-old has had to undergo hip and knee surgery. Only at the 2021 World Cup did he try his luck in between.
