Mick Schumacher returns to the racing car and tests for the French racing team Alpine.
According to “motorsport-magazin.com” the team confirmed a test on Tuesday in Jerez, Spain. However, Schumacher will not be in a Formula 1 car, but in a Le Mans prototype.
Alpine will return to the hypercar segment of the World Endurance Championship in 2024. It is not known whether additional drivers will be used in the test drives.
Alpine motorsport director Bruno Famin confirmed talks with Schumacher back in September: “I think it would be a good thing for both parties. But at the moment we are just talking and will hopefully organize a test soon.” These efforts now appear to have been successful.
It remains to be seen whether Schumacher will subsequently be signed. If Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has his way, the 24-year-old, who is currently active as a test and reserve driver for Mercedes in Formula 1, will remain on board in the next F1 season.
“Hope dies last”
“Mick is part of the family. If his commitment to another manufacturer allows him to be our reserve driver, then of course we will keep him,” said the Austrian at the race in Singapore.
So far there is probably no fixed Alpine driver pairing for the 2024 World Endurance Championship season. Schumacher’s actual goal is to return to Formula 1. “Hope dies last. As long as all the seats are not taken, it is not over,” he said he recently told the “SID”.
In fact, only Williams’ second driver in Formula 1 has not yet been confirmed for next year. The American rookie Logan Sargeant (22) is on the hot seat at the traditional racing team after poor performances and many accidents.
Mick Schumacher, son of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher, drove for Haas in the premier class from 2021 to 2022, but was unable to make a lasting impression there and was replaced by countryman Nico Hülkenberg (36) in 2023.
