The club would have liked to keep her, but Schult did not accept the offer to extend her expiring contract. “It was a very difficult decision because I know what I have at this club. But I don’t want to say goodbye in the middle of the season, there’s time for that in the summer. There are still so many games to play, so I want to be there everyone at the club is working hard for our success and enjoying it – as I have done every season,” she said.
It is unclear whether the keeper will end her active career or will still play for another club. Schult has been a mother of twins since 2020 and explained at the end of last year that it was difficult for her to reconcile family and work.
Sports director Kellermann: Hoped for Schult to stay
“After very trusting and open discussions about her future, we hoped to the last that Almuth would accept the contract offer she had and continue playing for VfL Wolfsburg,” said Ralf Kellermann, sporting director of the VfL women: “At the same time, we respect the motives to take a different path with a view to her personal situation and to leave us in the summer after nine successful years.”
13 big titles with VfL
Schult moved from SC 07 Bad Neuenahr to Wolfsburg in 2013 and won 13 major titles with the club. In 2014 she won the Champions League with Lower Saxony. She was German champion five times and cup winner seven times.
The 30-year-old also became European champion with the German national team in 2013 and Olympic champion in 2016. She made a name for herself off the field as an ARD expert at the 2021 men’s European Championship, and she is also a co-founder of the “Football can do more” initiative, which advocates more gender equality in German football.
