Almost all metros are standing still for hours due to a malfunction with the new metro system

Almost all metro lines were not used for two hours tonight. At around 5:15 p.m., travelers were told to get off the subway. OAt 7.15 pm, the GVB reported via Twitter that the metros were going to run again, but it turned out to be test drives with travelers. An hour later, the timetable was fully resumed.

Metro lines 50, 51, 53 and 54 could not be used, the North/South line was running. According to a spokesperson for the GVB, it was due to problems with the server and the new security system. “We are working on it, but unfortunately I cannot give an estimate of how long it will take,” she said at around 5:20 p.m.

Extremely unhappy

At the time, the transport company still hoped that metro traffic could be restarted soon. “It is an extremely unfortunate time.”

The North/South line was also shut down for a short time around 5.40 pm. “We are going to do a general reset and that means that the North/South line will now also be stopped for a while. Hopefully the reset will ensure a restart,” said the GVB spokesperson. After about half an hour, the North/South line was put back into use, but metros on other lines could only start running again an hour later.

At 19:15 tweeted the GVB: ‘Metro 50, 51, 53, 54 update: starting up again. Take into account large delays’. It was then a test drive. Passengers standing at the stations could board.

“We think we have found the cause, but we need to run some tests to be sure,” the spokesperson said. “We have to test, because we don’t want it to stand still again.”

Automated

At around 8.20 p.m. it was possible to drive completely according to the timetable. “We’ve been testing for the past half hour to hour,” the spokesman said. “We took them with us wherever travelers were at the station. We see that the system functions stably and can really start up again.”

The cause is still unclear, the spokesperson said. “The bottom line is that there were a number of technical failures at the same time. We still have to find out what exactly was going on.”

Security system

Earlier this year and last year, almost all metros, except for the North/South line, were also stopped for a number of days for an hour or more because of the new security system. The last time that happened was many months ago. This is therefore a major setback for the GVB. “We are very disappointed with this, we find this very annoying.”

The buses were overcrowded tonight due to the outage.
