Almost all coats from the Volkspark collection gone: ‘Show the necessity of them’

Sara Kroes’s fundraising campaign to help the underprivileged to a winter coat seems to be an undiminished success. Of the 130 coats that were hung yesterday in the Zaanse Volkspark, only six are left. Sara calls it “overwhelming with a bittersweet coating.”

Sara couldn’t have imagined a better ending her fundraiser can think of. According to her, it is incomprehensible that almost all coats have been given a good new destination within a day and a half. Yet it is double: “The speed with which the coats have been collected shows the need for them.”

“The man said with a wink that he got a free coat and fashion advice”

The stories of the people who come to pick up a coat touch Sara. “The first coat was picked up by a man from Poelenburg who cycled all the way here. The man said with a wink that he received a free coat and fashion advice from three women.”

Young generations

What Sara herself has learned from this initiative? The awareness of her children. “Our children thought it was impressive to experience. They now realize more how good we have it and how spicy it can sometimes be for others. It makes them motivated to do their part next year.”

Because there seems to be no doubt about that, according to the initiator. “If necessary, we will do it again next year.” After all the busy days it seems to her to be nice in a house without coats. “Coincidentally, I just found a bag with four coats. I’ll hang it in the park tomorrow morning and then it’s good for now.”
