The Berlin police arrested two suspected catalytic converter thieves on Sunday night – but one of them only after a chase.

According to the police, a witness had informed the investigators about loud noises at the Tegeler See parking lot on Sunday night. When police officers arrived, they saw two men – one of them approached the officers with a battery-powered saw.

Since the 23-year-old did not stop despite being asked, an officer used pepper spray. When arrested, the suspect put up strong resistance, so that three officers were slightly injured, but were able to continue their work.

His alleged accomplice had meanwhile fled and, according to the police, raced far too quickly across several intersections at red traffic lights. Finally, he drove into a traffic sign and crashed into a tree.

According to the information, the 18-year-old also resisted his arrest, two police officers were slightly injured, but were able to continue the service.

Because of his own injuries, the 18-year-old, who according to the police does not have a driver’s license, was hospitalized.

Several mail items were found in his car, it said. There is a suspicion that these were stolen.
