All white bras in Vries are striking works of art

In Vries there is no longer a white bra hanging on the washing line. They have all been used for a striking work of art in the center of the village.

The white underwear flutters in front of the Boniface Church. “All from women from the village”, laughs Mathilde Leonore.

The artist has made a daring creation and it will be part of the course of the European Championships in cycling that will pass through Drenthe in September. “I wanted to depict ‘white women’. The rising fog. Real Drenthe heritage,” she explains. “But ‘wieven’ are also women.”

This is how Mathilde Leonore, who works with activity center Place the World and Volksvermaken Vries, came up with the idea of using bras for the artwork. “As an artist I look at a man. Then I see an angular jawline and also the shoulders. A woman often has round shapes and a bra has naturally beautiful round shapes.”

The villager placed a call and in a short time received enough underwear to finish the job. “Sometimes women reacted surprised, but when I explained it, they immediately went to look in their closet. It leads to a lot of discussion. Can a bra be washed on the washing line? That’s the beauty of art.”
