Max Rieger’s fourth solo project comes with elongated synth pads and intensely thoughtful vocals. “Head is heavy,” murmurs the singer of the Stuttgart indie band Die Nerve in “21 Gramm,” a slow-tempo song that, like the remaining nine tracks, represents the “urgency of the creative process.” The title song, also with a low BPM number, has the qualities of a neo-chanson.
Someone who takes himself and his belly button seriously
The rest is just shuffling around with threatening lines like “I just borrowed the time”. You can like something like that, but also find it pretentious. Rieger moves between these poles. “I was never really who I wanted to be,” he sings. Holla, the forest fairy! Someone who takes himself and his belly button seriously.
