Status: 01/30/2023 00:14

Juri Knorr was voted the best young player at the Handball World Championship, Andreas Wolff the best goalkeeper – against strong competition.

Both German national players are in the all-star team, which the international handball federation published on Sunday evening (01/29/2023). World champions Denmark’s Mathias Gidsel has been named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Knorr also best scorer of the tournament

Knorr was the tournament’s top scorer with 53 goals and 52 assists. The 22-year-old middleman of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen recorded 105 points in nine games, three points more than the Berlin professional Gidsel. The 23-year-old Gidsel was the top scorer in the World Cup with 60 goals.

During the course of the tournament, Knorr was the pivotal point in the German game. The youngster played his third tournament for the German handball team, for the first time he was primarily responsible for the playmaker position. Knorr and the DHB team secured fifth place by beating Norway 28:24.

Wolff prevails against strong competition

Wolff prevailed against strong competition in the Best Goalkeeper election, including Gonzalo Perez de Vargas (Spain), Niklas Landin (Denmark) and Torbjörn Bergerud (Norway). With 112 saves, Wolff is the first goalkeeper since France’s Thierry Omeyer in Qatar 2015 to have a three-digit number of saves.
