All signals are green: another 40 million to solve problems on the track near Meppel

A parliamentary majority has definitively approved an additional investment of forty million euros to solve the problems on the railway around Meppel.

An amendment was tabled by a majority of parties at the end of January, making today’s vote a formality.

All trains that travel to the Northern Netherlands pass through the station in Meppel. There are frequent disruptions on this route, an average of nine hours per week. This concerns the trains that go from Zwolle to Meppel, from there to Groningen and Leeuwarden. The trains between Zwolle and Emmen run on a different track.

The proposal was supported by NSC, VVD, BBB, D66, JA21, Christenunie, GroenLinks-PvdA and the CDA. The money must be used for an extra platform with faster switches, an adjustment to the level crossings between Meppel and Zwolle and an improved power supply for the trains.

Previously, an additional 35 million euros had already been made available, so an additional 40 million euros will now be added.
