The whole of Europe is now dealing with the omikron wave, which is again apparent from the new corona map published by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). No country is turning orange anymore, let alone green. In fact, almost all countries color dark red. Only Poland, part of Slovakia and Romania have a lighter (red) color.

Romania last week was the only European country that turned almost completely orange. Today, however, the entire country turns red. Poland and Slovakia also (partly) share the red color.
While a large part of Germany, as well Austria, had a light red color last week, this has now been changed to dark red. Just like the rest of Europe.
What do the color codes mean?
It ECDC publishes a color-coded European corona map every Thursday, based on the number of infections and the percentage of positive tests in the past fourteen days. The card has four colors: green, orange, red and dark red. From 500 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, the map turns dark red.
A country or region turns red in two cases: when the infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants fluctuates during fourteen days between 75 and 200 with a positivity ratio higher than 4 percent or when the infection rate is higher than 200, regardless of the positivity ratio.
The color codes are a recommendation for EU member states to impose conditions on travellers, such as mandatory quarantines or the presentation of negative tests. It is up to them to decide which ones they will eventually be. In Belgium, a red color in an EU country means that non-vaccinated persons from the age of 12 who do not have a recovery certificate must be tested if they travel (back) from that zone to Belgium. The Belgian government always applies the new color codes on Saturdays.
