Four shots were fired this afternoon in the Terschellingstraat in Alkmaar, local residents tell NH Nieuws. Nevertheless, a number of them shrug their shoulders about it: “We have already experienced a shooting here three times,” says Marja Terstal. Police have now arrested a 26-year-old man.
The suspect is from Alkmaar. His role and involvement in the incident are being investigated by the police. The shots took place in Alkmaar Noord, near the Mare shopping center and the Municipal Dalton College.
While the police investigate and a sniffer dog searches the bushes for bullet casings, a local resident trims the hedge. Children play in the playground and neighbors chat with each other.
Just like Marja, local resident Debby Korèn indicates that three shots have been fired in the street in recent years. “And also several stabbings. As long as there are no people on the ground, there is no panic,” she says.
“If I have to settle for every police bus that drives up, I can be stressed all day”
Maria thinks the same about that. Earlier, she experienced a police raid on the street. “Then I couldn’t sleep for a few nights. But now nothing has happened to me: we are used to it here.”
According to her, ‘something happens every time’ in a flat opposite Marja and the police visit regularly. “If I have to settle with every police bus that drives up, I can be stressed all day,” she says soberly.
Two years ago, Debby also experienced a shooting incident. Then shots were fired right in front of her door while she was sitting in the garden with her daughter. “I found that more intense, because I was closer to it,” she says. The man with the gun in his hand then looked straight into her eyes: “Then I ran inside, I didn’t want to wait any longer.”
NH Nieuws spoke to local residents who are not surprised that there is again shooting in the neighborhood. Text continues below the video:
Resident Malia Hollo reacts shocked to the incident, despite the fact that she has also experienced a lot in the area. “I heard four shots, very clearly. I was a little scared because it happened in front of the door and it sounded very different from fireworks,” she says.
According to Debby, the reason why there is so much tumult in Terschellingstraat is because people are ‘placed’ who urgently need a home. “There are also people with whom the mental care is not in order and the guidance is also not.” Those people can do little about it, she reasons. “I don’t approve, but I think we should also look at health care.”
“I’ve lived here for fifteen years now, but I’m tired of it now. I would like to move to a quieter neighborhood for my children.”
Another local resident who grew up in the neighborhood and wishes to remain anonymous, wants to get out of the neighborhood as soon as possible. “I’ve lived here for fifteen years now, but I’ve had enough. That is mainly because they take care of the homeless, addicts and confused people in the flat behind us. I would like to move to a quieter neighborhood for my children.”
But that is difficult, says Malia – who every time ‘hopes it will get better in the future’. “It’s not easy to get another home,” she concludes.
