Alkmaar cycling track new crisis emergency shelter asylum seekers Ter Apel

From 8 August, 175 asylum seekers will be accommodated for four weeks in the Sportpaleis in Alkmaar. The municipality is thus helping to relieve the pressure on the application center in Ter Apel. Alkmaar has agreed this with the North Holland North Safety Region.

The Sportpaleis is still in use as a transfer location for refugees from Ukraine. As a result, according to the security region, it can be used as a crisis emergency shelter.

“It is good that we can contribute to this harrowing emergency in the short term. It is a simple form of shelter, but better than having to sleep on the floor,” emphasizes Alderman Joël Voordewind.

Heiloo closes

The Noord-Holland Noord safety region must organize three months of shelter for 225 asylum seekers. Since July 8, in Sports hall Het Vennewater in Heiloo provided space. But because the availability ends there, Alkmaar will be the next location. Also the velodrome is in april briefly used as emergency emergency shelter for Ter Apel.

The crisis shelter in the Sportpaleis will be available until September 11 at the latest, after which it will be available again for sports activities. It is still unknown where the security region will provide shelter in the last few weeks of September.

Problems at Ter Apel

The persistent problems at the application center for asylum seekers in Ter Apel have resulted in each security region having to receive 225 asylum seekers in the period from the beginning of July to the beginning of October. This should end the circumstances in which asylum seekers find themselves who cannot find a place in Ter Apel.

In Noord-Holland Noord, fifty people are accommodated in ‘t Zand for a longer period of time. In addition, the region must still have 175 reception places available until 1 October.
