Father of shock rock, midwife of glam, godfather of music provocateurs from Marilyn Manson to Rammstein: Alice Cooper’s influence on the genre is larger than life. And Vincent Damon Furnier, portrayer of rock ‘n’ roll’s Darth Vader, is big on survival. After the end of the band almost fifty years ago, he got drunk and worked his way up again with excessive golf (handicap 2), psychotherapy and “poison”. Since then, the devout Christian has been walking the stages solo with lots of fake blood and rolling heads, accompanied by the bigoted clamor of everyone who sees him as at least Satan’s perverse helper.
13 solid, kicking songs that are never about to become senile
Now in his 58th career year, he’s releasing Road, again produced by Bob Ezrin. With his touring band, he built 13 solidly kicking songs, which never rely on old age. Okay, there is nothing forward-looking. But numbers like “All Over The World”, “Go Away” or “Big Boots” are fat riff rockers that the old master (75) celebrates with steam and timing. “Baby Please Don’t Go” and “100 More Miles” get sentimental for a moment before Alice gives a big bow to “My Generation” with “Magic Bus”.
