Algeria last German preliminary round opponent at World Cup

Algeria is Germany’s third preliminary round opponent at the 2023 Handball World Cup in Poland and Sweden.

The North Africans secured fifth place at the African Cup in Cairo and thus their last ticket for the World Cup. The other rivals of the DHB selection at the World Cup from January 11th to 29th in group E have been fixed for two and a half weeks: Asian champions Qatar (January 13th) and Serbia (January 15th). The game against Algeria will take place on January 17th. Venue for the three games is Katowice. The first three teams in each of the eight groups qualify for the main round.

“Algeria are one of the strongest teams in Africa, even if they didn’t make it to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations this time,” said national coach Alfred Gislason. “Algeria have technically good players and fight with heart and soul in a passionate defense.” The German national team has played six games against Algeria so far and won them all.

African champions became hosts Egypt in Cairo with a 37:25 in the final against Cape Verde. Third place went to Morocco with a 28:24 against Tunisia.
