Alexander Zverev will probably also cancel the US Open

Germany’s best tennis player Alexander Zverev will probably miss the last Grand Slam of the calendar year.

Alexander Zverev has to postpone his comeback on the big tennis stage for the time being. As “Bild” reports, the 25-year-old will promptly announce that he will not be able to take part in the US Open (August 29 to September 11). At a press conference in early August, he did not want to tick off participation, although time was “very short”.

The hamburger twisted his ankle against Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the French Open at the beginning of June. Zverev tore several ligaments in his right ankle and had to have an operation. As a result, he missed participation in Wimbledon. Until the very end he had hoped to be fit enough for the US Open that he also had a realistic chance of winning the tournament.

He had previously ruled out mere participation. “I won’t come back when I’m 100 percent fit, but when I can win the tournament,” Zverev recently told “Bild”.

Zverev targets Davis Cup in Hamburg

However, the US Open is coming a little too early. Instead of playing at the Masters in Montreal and Cincinnati to gain competitive practice, he stayed in his adopted home of Monaco and focused on training.

Zverev wants to be back on the pitch by the Davis Cup group stage in mid-September in Hamburg at the latest. There the German team will play against France (14th), Belgium (16th) and Australia (18th) to qualify for the finals. The chances would increase with the top player.

Team boss Michael Kohlmann had seen “a few question marks” in relation to the injuries to Alexander Zverev and Oscar Otte when the squad was nominated, but he was “in good spirits”. Otte is also back on the tennis court after an operation on the inner meniscus.
